Every morning we wake up and take a breath, we are receiving a gift. Life itself is not something we created, earned, or purchased—it is a gracious gift from God. Far too often, we get caught up in the busyness of daily routines, worries, or ambitions and forget to pause and recognize that the very fact we are alive is an act of God’s mercy and love.
The Apostle Paul reminds us in Ephesians 2:8–10:
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
This scripture is powerful because it tells us two truths about life:
- Life is a gift of grace. We are not alive because of our own strength or achievements but because of God’s kindness.
- Life has a purpose. We are God’s handiwork, created with intention, and called to do good works that reflect His love.
1. Gratitude for the Gift of Life
Gratitude should be the heartbeat of a believer’s life. When we realize that our existence is rooted in God’s grace, every moment becomes an opportunity to say “thank You.” Gratitude transforms ordinary days into moments of appreciation, and it provides us with strength even during tough times.
Psalm 118:24 says, “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Each day is a fresh reminder that God is giving us time, breath, and opportunity.
2. Rediscovering Our True Identity
God does not just give us life—He shapes it with meaning. Paul calls us “God’s workmanship.” In other words, we are His masterpiece. You are not a mistake, an accident, or a random being. But you were created with love and for a specific purpose to reflect God’s character and goodness in the world.
Jeremiah 1:5 declares: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” It means your life matters deeply to God, and He has woven meaning into your existence from the very beginning.
3. Living with Purpose
If life is a gift, the best way to show appreciation is to live it intentionally. We are not just here to consume, survive, or pursue temporary pleasures. We are here to serve God and others, walking in the good works He prepared for us.
Micah 6:8 gives us a clear picture: “He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”
When we live purposefully, our lives become more than schedules and goals—they become testimonies of God’s grace.
4. Remembering the Eternal Perspective
Life on earth is temporary, but it points to something eternal. Our days are short compared to eternity, but they are profoundly meaningful when lived for Christ.
James 4:14 reminds us: “What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” This verse is not to discourage us—it’s to awaken us. Since life is short, we must use our time wisely, honoring God with the life He has given.

We stop taking moments for granted and begin to see them as opportunities to reflect on the grace of God.
So today, pause. Breathe. Thank God for life. And then ask Him: “Lord, how can I use this gift of life today to glorify You?”
Because life is a gift, and gifts are meant to be cherished and used for the glory of the Giver.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the incredible gift of life. Every breath we take, every moment we live, is a reflection of Your grace and love. Lord, forgive us for the times we have taken our lives for granted, forgetting that each day is a sacred opportunity to glorify You.
Lord, help us to live with grateful hearts, recognizing that our purpose is not our own, but yours. May we walk in the good works You have prepared for us, serving others, loving deeply, and reflecting Your light in every step we take.
Give us wisdom to value the time we have, courage to pursue our calling, and humility to remember that it is all by your grace. Let our lives be a living testimony of your love, mercy, and faithfulness.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
